God isn't going to fix everything
In a religious setting God can (and does) fix everything. In the real world this isn't always the case.
If, like me, you have been through your own deep religious beliefs only to find them flawed, then you would have your own doubts about God. This article isn’t really about doubting God, but instead is about living in the reality which we are given (by God). Very recently my Mother has had to go to hospital emergency and while many of us pray (myself included) for her to get better it will really depend on the doctors.
Many would say that God then works through the doctors to perform ‘miracles’. While I would agree that doctors do perform miracles (real ones, not make-believe) it is the Doctor’s years of training and practice that make them miracle workers. I’m not saying God doesn’t play a part, but instead, I want to discuss how a realistic faith based in reality is good for mental health.
I believed all the standard Christian things and while I wouldn’t say it can’t possibly be true (I don’t know) I do know that God wants us to be wise, not ignorant. This is dangerous ground to cover of course, because for many people religion is not just about faith, it is a cultural practice. To insult Christianity is to insult millions of believers. Thankfully, I don’t write to insult but to explore my faith and common ideas around religion.
One of the most common religious beliefs is that God will fix everything. As a very unorthodox Christian myself (I believe in the teachings of Jesus) I have to disagree with that statement. God puts us in certain situations for us to be the ones to fix things, just like they put people in our lives to help at the right time. God doesn’t (in my personal experience) perform magic tricks for believers.
If God is the creator of the heavens and the earth, then all of the laws of physics and reality itself is God’s creation. They do not need to bend it and alter it. It is made to be like it is. Think about that. The reality of God is the reality of the world. A mirror on its creator. A slow-moving God that evolves as the Earth has evolved, changed and been through disasters. A God that may well do miraculous things.
The thing is, I have never seen it. Doesn’t mean it’s not true, just very unlikely. Love and cherish your family rather than expect miracles from God. Because your family is the miracle.
